A brand-new Heraklion International Airport is under construction at Kastelli (about 40 km southeast of Heraklion) to replace the existing Nikos Kazantzakis facility. It’s planned to be one of Greece’s largest airports, with a modern terminal and significantly higher capacity (over 15 million passengers per year) and is scheduled to open in 2027.
